As Advertised - Good Basic GPS Device, April 14, 2012---By Erik "Honest Dylan Fan" (San Diego)
I've had a Garmin on my bike for years and finally got around to getting one for running, and I have been very pleased with the Forerunner 210. It does everything you need and it is no bigger than a basic sports watch. I didn't get the heart rate monitor because I am cheap, but that seems to be the component that causes the most problems. And don't be put off by all the complaints about the 4-prong charging mount - it's not nearly as hard to connect as some reviewers have said. If you can floss your teeth you can do this. I have had no problems with charging/downloading from the 210. It is kind of a shame that the strap is part of the watch, but at least it seems like a pretty tough strap. The Garmin Edge 500 on my mountain bike has withstood some serious abuse with no problems whatsoever, so I expect the Forerunner will last a while too. If you are considering buying it, I advise you to go ahead. It's fun to tinker with and it will motivate you to get off the sofa and go for a run. It's worth $200.
Lightweight, simple to use and very effective, 26 Aug 2011---By igs1963
This is a great bit of kit which I bought to replace a Polar watch, HRM and footpod that I had had for a few years and, until the watch broke, was very comfortable using. I had avoided GPS based devices in the past because many were quite large/heavy and reports that they were unreliable in acquiring the satellites. It was therefore with some scepticism that I made the plunge into the world of GPS based devices and bought a Garmin Forerunner 210. However, I needn't have been worried as the 210 does exactly what it says in the advertising material!
As soon as it arrived I charged it, which took a couple of hours, then took it on a run. The device picked up the HRM monitor straight away and acquired the satellites in about a minute.
On the run the display provided exactly the information I needed - how far I had run, at what pace I was running, how long for and my HR. The display is easy to read and toggling through the elapsed time, clock and HR views is easy.
On return I uploaded the information on the device to Garmin Connect which provided an extensive analysis of the run including plotting it on a map. I use the wed based version of Garmin Connect through Firefox (on a Linux based PC) which does not support the Garmin Connect plug-in, but manually uploading the file from the watch is easy.
Bottom-line - this is a light and easy to use device which should provide most club runners with just what they need. Highly recommended.
